Racing Instructions (continued)

5, The course intended to be set and a graphic of the associated marks will, when possible, be exhibited on the club notice board in plenty of time and additional copies will be available to all skippers.  Copies will be sent by post if requested from the sailing secretary.  Courses are dependant on wind conditions and may differ slightly from that exhibited.

6, VHF radio channel 'M' (37) will be used for race purposes and where possible all signals will be relayed.  Radio watch should be maintained prior to and throughout the race.

7, The starting system as detailed on the attached table will be used throughout the season for short and medium distance races.  The meaning of all other racing signals remains the same.

8, An MYC club flag will be used as a class flag for club races unless otherwise designated on the day.

9, The flag 'P' flown singly as a preparatory signal also means 'no penalty' (but see 10, below for standard penalty).  Flown with 'I' 'Z' or black flag indicates that the appropriate penalty applies.  (The black flag is unlikely to be flown for club racing).

10, The flag 'X' (individual recall) will be flown if any competing boat is significantly 'on course side' (OCS) at the start.  The standing penalty for any vessel being 'on course side' will be for that vessel to re-cross the start line before continuing to race.  It is the responsibility of the vessel's skipper to know if she is over the line.  For club races it is considered fair to attempt to warn transgressors by radio as soon as practical after the 'X' flag is flown.  Whilst an effort will be made to warn individual vessels that are 'OCS', this cannot be guaranteed.

11, The 'first substitute' flag will be flown for a general recall.

12, The primary signal is the flag.  Whilst sound signals will be given with every flag movement it should be remembered that sound signals are complementary to the flags.  A flag signal is valid even if the sound should fail.  Should the failure of a sound signal appear to cause any racing vessel significant disadvantage a general recall will be signalled.

13, Start lines will wherever possible, be in accordance with RYA/IYRU rules.  The type of start and position of the start line will be communicated to Skippers prior to commencement of the starting sequence.

14, Skippers of vessels retiring from a race must inform the race officer as soon as possible by:

  1. Informing him immediately on VHF radio (channel 37 or if no response channel 16).
  1. If not able to establish contact, immediately on reaching the race destination.
  1. If not able to establish contact and diverting to an alternate destination, must contact coast guard asking them to inform the club.
  1. If unable to make any contact, must inform the club by telephone immediately on arrival at destination.

15, These instructions conform as closely as possible to the current RYA/IYRU Racing Rules (1977 - 2000), and the recommended race management system.  Further modifications and improvements will be made on a continuous basis, and will be included in future revisions of these instructions.  It is inevitable that certain points are applicable only to Madoc Yacht Club races.

16, All boats wishing to protest will display a red protest flag which amends rule 61.1(a).
